Mark Curdo, who is a DJ on WCYY-FM (Portland’s primary modern rock radio station) called us a month or so ago and asked if we wanted to be involved in his pet project, a Spinal Tap tribute show involving all local bands. In particular, he wanted us to perform the one song on the disc that sounded like By Blood Alone, “Stonehenge”. We of course said yes. Upon further examination of the original track, we realized it was one of the harder songs to play on the original soundtrack.
After a few weeks of rehearsing the tune, the show rolled around the night after our Halloween show. Geno’s was packed and and opener, Left Hand Black, was about to take the stage. LHB is actually three fourths of Lewiston punk band Ghosthunter, and while you can hear Glenn Danzig’s influence in GH vocalist Jason’s voice during GH sets, when performing as LHB Jason sound EXACTLY like Danzig. Very creepy. Anyway, LHB was a lot of fun and a great choice as opener.
The actual SP part of the show was sort of hit or miss. Some of these bands did not put much emphasis on learning their allotted tune, and I don’t approve of bands trying to “wing it”. We went on next to last and went over pretty well. Runtt and I both agree that the standout bands of the night were Man-Witch doing “Rock and Roll Creation” (spot on AND furious), Pigboat doing “Hell Hole” (spot on and even more furious) and at the top of the heap was King Memphis doing “Gimme Some Money”. KM is a local rockabilly band and had the song and act down to a T, complete with all the stage moves and a blond, tall, bespectacled drummer.
