Halfway to Halloween Horror Ball 2: Mars Attacks!
w/ Covered in Bees, Vina’s Vicious Vixens
The first installment of the HWTHHB was such fun and a great sucess that we felt it had to be done again, but this time around the locale would be Geno’s, since the Space Gallery was just too much trouble to deal with, and the hoped for underage turnout didn’t happen at the first Ball. So, once again it’s By Blood Alone & Covered in Bees, with Aepril Schaile’s new dance troupe Vina’s Vicious Vixens doing a little sexy hoofing. The theme was “Mars Attacks!” which I later found out was a series of trading cards in the 50’s with these far out science fiction illustrations of patriotic earthmen fighting off an alien invasion. Cruella did another great job with set design, using all sorts of odd things to replicate space ships and robots, in a sort of Lost In Space way. The fans really went all out with their costumes – it was somewhat shocking to see the lengths that some of them went to with their designs. (Though my personal favorite was Boo from Covered in Bees “King Neil Diamond”: he sprayed adhesive onto a blue dress shirt, threw some glitter at it, and did his face up in King Diamond makeup!)
The Bees set went down great, as they are definitely the best Portland band IMO, and the crowd really ate it up. as the Bees are really building up a head of steam in terms of popularity. Aepril’s new dance troupe were all done up like the green orion slave girls from the original Star Trek, and did an amazing job with their dance. They were actually able to integrate moves from both the Susan Oliver and the Yvonne Craig interpretations. The one error was that a guy who they worked into the act was dressed in a next generation uniform, when the green orion slave girls were very much from the oroiginal series. Overall, a good performance, but not as good as the first Ball.
Our set went down well also, but I’m getting a bit frustrated about not having time to work on new material. Still, the crowd loved it. Runtt played in his fursuit again and was able to pull it off – I’m amazed he can do that.
